![]() So now I have a dedicated plex machine and a 1522+ to house all the media.Įdit: compares plex performance between the 920+ and 1522+. I read that the i3-10105 is supposed to be a great CPU for plex. I ended up getting the 1522+ and repurposing an old PC I have sitting around as a dedicated plex server. I had my eye on the 920+ for a year or so and I was hoping the 923+ would have an intel chip. Plays 1080p and 4K direct play no problem. I've outgrown my 218+ which as served me well for 4 plus years. If you're not sure, better to get something with an intel chip. If that's the case then any modern Synology + NAS will work. Direct Playing doesn't require much resources at all. ![]() So it is not ideal for Plex, if you plan on transcoding.Īs /u/Gooshy00 said, you need to figure out how much transcoding you will likely do. Īnd unfortunately the 923+ has an AMD processor. It provides information on transcoding ability of various NAS. See the Plex NAS Compatibility Guide (Google spreadsheet). ![]() Plex does not support hardware accelerated transcoding with AMD GPUs or on ARM based systems. The PC should have a Nvidia GPU (1050 or better) or Intel QuickSync graphics in the CPU (8th Gen CPU or newer). If you need to transcode 4K HDR media or multiple 1080p streams, consider using the NAS for storage and running Plex Media Server on a PC running Windows or Linux. The Celeron CPUs simply are not strong enough. Subtitle burning uses the CPU, even if using hardware accelerated transcoding. ![]() They will fail miserably if subtitle burning is required when transcoding. They will struggle to transcode and tonemap 4K HDR Blu-ray rips. Synology with Intel Celeron CPUs support hardware accelerated transcoding. Direct playing media or transcoding only audio will work fine. Synology with ARM or AMD CPUs do not support hardware accelerated transcoding with Plex (no GPU).
